This cozy place called Montcresson is located in a wooded area, about ten miles of Montargis.

Charmault The territory is surrounded by an almost exclusively agricultural, punctuated by a few private ponds.

But, this hamlet is best known for its Farm Inn, established 16 years ago by Mr. and Mrs. Lord. These farmers offer craft designed with traditional food products from their own farm.

Built in St. Louis, demolished in 1572 because he was part of the lordship of Coligny, he was rebuilt 30 years later.

the 17th century castle was restored by Ie family Boileau.

From 1627 to 1842 is Machault family who owns it and who is designing the park by Le Notre. Then in 1842, the family de Castries, who buys and passes it to the Duc de Magenta, Marshal MacMahon, husband of Elizabeth de Castries who stays there.

Marshal MacMahon, born Ie July 13, 1808 at the Chateau de Sully, near Autun, is a descendant of Irish which was first senior officer in the empire, then a lieutenant general. It was also one of the architects of colonialism in Algeria (from 1830), then promoted to head of all military Ie country in July 1858, his feats have marked the Crimean campaign. This leader of men against the Austrians also illustrated, and during the War of 1870.

In 1856 he began his political career, he was appointed senator by Napoleon III, then governor of Algeria from 1864 to 1870, and following the resignation of Adolphe Thiers, he was elected President of the Republic, and moved to the Elysee Palace from 1873 to 1879. After retiring from politics, he has lived most of his last years in his castle. Ie II died there October 17, 1893 at the age of 85.

His burial chamber located on the left side of the stage, was piously preserved intact by his descendants.

The Castle is entered in as a historic monument since September 1986.

Finally MacMahon attributed to a famous quote:
Indeed, Ie June 26 1875, following the terrible floods of the Garonne River, located near Toulouse, he exclaimed, "What water! What water!"
and the prefect who was with him, he reportedly replied:
"And yet, Mr. Marechal Ie, you only see above Ie"

This small town that is bisected along its length by the Loing and Canal Briare was during the 17th , 18th and 19th century an important economic artery. Today, the four locks on the town will come alive more than 2,500 times a year, since almost all Tourist boats are.

Montcresson, has an uncertain origin, were found two traces of ancient occupation: a breakthrough and a stone mound located near the Roman baths at Sceaux-du-Gâtinais.
His name is Gallo-Roman Mons Cressionis, meaning hill Cressius, which turned into Monte Cresione, then Montcresson.

the village center:
  • The church dates from the late 12th century, dedicated to St. Leger and Saint Sebastian, which are the two patron saints of Montcresson.
    Traces of Gothic style 13th century are visible on the portal columns and bays.
    Its steeple was damaged during the Fronde in 1652 and rebuilt in 1661, but the turret which allowed Allen to step on it was never completed.
    Inside you can admire several paintings of the 19th century, and stained offered by the MacMahon family in the late 19th century, on which an inscription telling us that the Chateau de la Forest was built by St. Louis.

  • Former convent called the "Fleur de Lys" which communicated with the church through a tunnel where there is still a vault.

Finally, the circuit of the hike, you might see the farm in the Great Brush, who has owned since the 16th century to the family of Tillet, a famous family of lawyers who lived at the Chateau de la Bussière, and possessed many castles in Montargis. This old fortified farmhouse now stands adjacent to a sawmill.
