Built in St. Louis, demolished in 1572 because he was part of the lordship of Coligny, he was rebuilt 30 years later.
the 17th century castle was restored by Ie family Boileau.
From 1627 to 1842 is Machault family who owns it and who is designing the park by Le Notre. Then in 1842, the family de Castries, who buys and passes it to the Duc de Magenta, Marshal MacMahon, husband of Elizabeth de Castries who stays there.
Marshal MacMahon, born Ie July 13, 1808 at the Chateau de Sully, near Autun, is a descendant of Irish which was first senior officer in the empire, then a lieutenant general. It was also one of the architects of colonialism in Algeria (from 1830), then promoted to head of all military Ie country in July 1858, his feats have marked the Crimean campaign. This leader of men against the Austrians also illustrated, and during the War of 1870.
In 1856 he began his political career, he was appointed senator by Napoleon III, then governor of Algeria from 1864 to 1870, and following the resignation of Adolphe Thiers, he was elected President of the Republic, and moved to the Elysee Palace from 1873 to 1879. After retiring from politics, he has lived most of his last years in his castle. Ie II died there October 17, 1893 at the age of 85.
His burial chamber located on the left side of the stage, was piously preserved intact by his descendants.
The Castle is entered in as a historic monument since September 1986.
Finally MacMahon attributed to a famous quote:
Indeed, Ie June 26 1875, following the terrible floods of the Garonne River, located near Toulouse, he exclaimed, "What water! What water!"
and the prefect who was with him, he reportedly replied:
"And yet, Mr. Marechal Ie, you only see above Ie"
